Abstract: Lampedusa island shows important criticisms related to intensive touristic activity that involved in an increase of electricity consumption and waste production. The touristic sprawl, which went faster after 1974, has increased the economic growth and urbanization throughout the island, converting rural areas in residential units. This still on-going process creates serious problems such as a fragmentation of the environmental continuity, a disturbance to natural habitats and land consumption in natural or semi-natural areas. Adequate island conversion in a more environmental sustainable community needs to be faced by local Management Plans establishment. In order to support the development of such communities, knowledge of the environmental setting is fundamental. For this purpose land cover/use assessment thematic dataset have to be produced and evaluated. In fact Land Cover maps and their temporal changes are considered crucial for sustainable development considering their direct relationship with the ecosystem processes, with soil consumption, and with air, water and soil quality. Remote sensing data analysis can provide thematic maps describing, from the past until now, the land cover/use and its changes for further urban planning. In this work land cover and vegetation changes occurred from 1984 to 2014 are provided by the use of different sensors and thematic layers.
