Abstract

AEREST aims to create a screening tool that provides an "ecological" way to evaluate reading skills. In order to face the demands coming from school and everyday life, pupils and students need to be able to read accurately, understand what they read, and do this in a reasonably small amount of time. Here, this ability is referred to as "reading efficiency". The assessment tools currently available fail to properly assess reading efficiency, as they normally measure decoding (accuracy and reading speed) and reading comprehension separately. The goal of this project is to create and experiment a screening tool based on a new parameter, the Reading Efficiency Parameter (REP), that provides a combined measure of text reading accuracy, speed and comprehension. The screening test will be designed so as to be fast and easy to use in class by teachers, and will be implemented in supports like tablets or PCs, so as to increase ease of administration and data reliability.
Further investigation will concern the transition from loud to silent reading and its relation to reading comprehension in skilled readers and in pupils with reading difficulties.
